In 1987, I met
Carl Flowers when we both volunteered to help get a men's baseball league off
the ground here in Woodland California. Carl joined our Board of Directors in
1988 and served as league president in 1992. Carl was very helpful to our
community relations as he was very active in that area. He was also very active
in Church and volunteer organizations.
Carl was an "average" player so had to endure his share of time on the
bench. I on the other hand hated to be on the bench but when it was
my turn to sit, I was always glad if Carl was there too. He had a
fantastic sense of humor and actually made the time on the bench
fun. He always kept us entertained.
I will tell Just one funny story. Carl had an uncanny ability to hit the
catchers glove when hitting. We soon learned that when the game was
on the line and we absolutely had to have a guy get on base, we
would send Carl up to get "catchers interference," which he would do
every time. He would get 8-10 of these calls per 20 game season. One
day just such a situation presented itself and league veteran
catcher Hank Gilliam was behind the plate and he was "on to" Carl.
He turned to the ump and said "watch this guy he is going to try to
hit my glove, he does it on purpose, don't let him get away with
it." First pitch Carl swings and hits Hanks glove, Hank goes nuts,
"see, see, he did it just like I said" and jumping up and down in a
rage. The ump calmly points Carl to first base and says to Hank, "If
he is in the box, you have to stay away from his swing. If anyone
looked in our dugout, we were all falling off the dugout bench with
laughter, Carl had struck again!
Carl became ill at a tournament game in Reno in 1993 and went straight to
the doctor when he got home. The word was not good and we lost Carl
to cancer a short time later. He left his wife Patty and three kids.
He was 45 years old. He was a great team mate and friend, and a fine
man. He was the first loss of this kind to our league, the next year
at our fifth annual Labor Day Tournament, we named it after him.
